Pearl River splits with Holmes in non-division soccer action

            RIDGELAND --- Pearl River Community College split with Holmes in women’s and men’s MACJC non-division soccer action here Friday with the Lady Wildcats pulling off an impressive 5-1 victory, while the Wildcats fell 1-0 in double-overtime.
            PRCC’s women improved to 2-2 overall, while its men are now 1-1.
            In the women’s game, sophomores Christina Gentry of Horn Lake High and Karley Mitchell of Poplarville High scored first half goals via assists from Natalie Lechner of Pascagoula High and Kacy Mixon of East Central High, respectively, to give the Lady Wildcats a 2-0 edge at the half.
            In the second half, Chelsea Parsons of Biloxi High banged in a penalty kick to pump PRCC’s lead to 3-0 before Holmes’ Courtney Nolan answered with a goal to make it 3-1.
            Mitchell and Gentry followed with back-to-back goals to end the scoring. Brooke Blackledge of Northeast Jones High got an assist on Mitchell’s score, while Gentry’s second was unassisted.
            In the men’s game, the two teams battled to a 0-0 stalemate in regulation and it took two overtime periods before Holmes’ Hunter Warren scored the game winning goal off a free kick.
            PRCC’s men return to action Saturday when they host Broward (Fla.) in a 2 p.m. contest, while both River squads open MACJC South Division play Saturday, Sept. 7, when they travel to Jones County in Ellisville for 5:30 p.m. (women) and 7:30 p.m. (men) contests.
