River baseball, softball open seasons this week

           POPLARVILLE --- Pearl River Community College’s spring sports kick off this week with the Wildcat baseball team hosting Marion Military Institute Thursday and the Lady Wildcat softball squad hosting Alabama Southern on Friday.
            The PRCC-MMI and PRCC-ACSS doubleheaders both start at 4 p.m.
            Fourth-year head coach Josh Hoffpauir’s group finished 41-14 a year ago, which boasted an MACJC South Division championship. But Hoffpauir admits that a repeat effort in 2014 will be an uphill climb.

PRCC sets Fall League for high schoolers

POPLARVILLE --- The Pearl River Community College baseball program is set to host its annual Fall League for high school players.
The league begins Thursday, October 10th.
Registration will start at 5 p.m. at Wildcat Stadium followed by a pro-style showcase.
The participants will be divided into six teams and play eight fall games over five weeks. A major emphasis is placed on improvement through fundamentals and understanding in game situations.

Baseball Showcase set July 16 at PRCC

POPLARVILLE --- Pearl River Community College will host a Baseball Showcase here Tuesday, July 16, in Wildcat Stadium.
            The showcase was originally scheduled for July 6, but was postponed due to rainy conditions.
            Registration begins at 2 p.m. with the showcase starting at 3 p.m.
            Head coach Josh Hoffpauir encourages all players to participate.

Pearl River baseball, softball All-Academic squads says NJCAA

            POPLARVILLE --- Pearl River Community College baseball and softball  copped NJCAA All-Academic Team honors for the 2013 season, while three of those squads’ athletes were tagged with Exemplary Academic Achievement accolades.
            Eleventh-year head coach Leigh White’s softball team achieved the prestigious honor via its overall 3.4 grade-point average, while third-year head baseball coach Josh Hoffpauir saw his squad honored with its 3.1 GPA.
            NJCAA teams with a 3.0 or higher overall GPA receive the honor.

Wildcats Fry, Talley selected in MLB draft

            POPLARVILLE --- Pearl River Community College pitchers Brandon Fry and Christian Talley have been selected in the 2013 Major League Baseball Draft.
            Fry, a sophomore out of Nease High in Jacksonville, Fla., was selected in the 18th round by the San Diego Padres; while Talley, a sophomore who prepped at Hancock County High, was picked in the 26th round by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.
            Both have already signed with the University of Southern Mississippi’s Golden Eagles.

Host Pearl River wraps season with 5-0 defeat to top-ranked LSU-E in Region 23 Tournament

            POPLARVILLE — Host Pearl River Community college wrapped a remarkable 2013 season with a 5-0 setback to second-seeded and top-ranked LSU-Eunice (La.) to hand the Bengals their second straight regional championship in the Region 23 Tournament here Saturday in Wildcat Stadium.
            PRCC, which finished the year at 41-13 overall, opened regional play with a 12-1 win (eight innings) over top-seeded MACJC champion East Central on Thursday before falling into the loser’s bracket via a 7-3 setback to LSU-E 7-3 in the second round on Friday.
