General Questions:

Q: How much does an online course cost, and are there any additional fees for online courses?

Q: Will I ever have to come to campus for anything?

A: Online students are required to drive to either Poplarville campus or the Forrest County Center at least twice (but no more than three times) for each online class to take proctored exams. Other visits to the campus may be recommended but are not currently required. This would be an occasion such as advisement. |back to top|

Q: What is a proctored exam?

A: A proctored exam is a test a student takes in the presence of a specified College employee at a designated testing site. To take a proctored exam, the student must 1- schedule an appointment and 2- show a picture ID prior to taking the exam. Use the links in the Proctor Information section of the site to schedule a proctored exam. |back to top|

Q: What is my Student Profile?

A: The Student Profile is a list of the online courses for which you registered for during any particular semester. You will use the Student Profile to verify your registration was successful or denied and to receive your textbook for your online courses. |back to top|

Q: How do I view my Student Profile?

Q: How do I contact my online class instructor?

A: To contact your online instructor, look at the information in your course or on your Student Profile. The instructor information will be in the course syllabus.  The instructor information will be in the course syllabus.  You can also click the 'Inbox' in Canvas to send your instructor an e-mail. Q: Where do I get my textbooks for my online class?

A: Students taking online courses are responsible for acquiring the required textbooks by whatever means he or she chooses. Students may choose to place an order for textbooks required for online courses from the PRCC Bookstore. Purchasing textbooks for online classes follows much the same procedure as for traditional classes; however, the Student Profile provides specific information regarding textbooks for online classes. Options for obtaining textbooks for online classes click here.

The student should have the textbooks required for online courses in his/her possession on or before the day online classes begin. Students must use the exact ISBN for the text rather than simply the title of the text. Many "textbooks: are bundles which include access codes. Used textbooks purchased from online vendors, other bookstores, or other students are not guaranteed to have the proper access codes. Be mindful of the fact that many textbooks change from semester to semester due to requirements from the publishers.|back to top|

Computer Questions

Q: Do I need a computer of my own to take online classes?

A: YES! It is very important that you have a computer of your own to take online classes. Do not rely on computers in a lab or library. These should only be used as backup if your computer breaks or there is a power outage. |back to top|

Q: What are the computer requirements for an online class?

A: Each student planning to take an online class should have his or her own personnel computer. Your computer should be equipped with at least the following:

  • Screen Size: A minimum of 1024x600. That is the average size of a netbook.
  • Computer Speed and Processor: Use a computer 5 years old or newer when possible. 1 GB of RAM, 2 GHz processor.
  • Internet Speed: Minimum of 512kbps.
  • Operating System: Windows XP SP3 and newer, Mac OSX 10.6 and newer, Linux chromeOS, iOS 5 and newer, and/or Android 2.3 and newer. It is recommended that you install the Mobile Apps for iOS or Android devices.
  • Web Browser: Canvas supports the last two versions of every browser (Internet Explorer, Chrome, Safari, Firefox) and Flash release. It is recommended that you update to the newest version of whatever brower you are using, as well as the most up-to-date Flash plug-in. JavaScript must be enabled in your browser. Q: What computer knowledge should I have to take an online class?

A: Students should be familiar with the operating system of their computer and Microsoft Office. Students should also be familiar with the basics of email and maneuvering through the Internet. Prior to taking the first online class, a student may take the READI assessment. This assessment will provide a very good understanding of the skills needed to take an online class.

If you are not accustomed to checking your email daily and problem solving technical issues, you should reconsider your decision to take an online class. |back to top|

Q: I am experiencing strange behavior with Canvas. What should I do?

A: Most often, strange behavior is related to your browser.  First, make sure that your browser is compatible with Canvas.  If you continue experiencing strange behavior, click the 'Help' button in the top, right-hand corner of Canvas after you login.  From there, you can submit a help ticket or chat with Canvas support. |back to top|

Schedule Change & Withdrawal Questions

Q: How do I change my online class schedule?

A: To change your online class schedule, complete the Schedule Change Form. The Schedule Change form is located on the Forms page. The form is emailed to the Office of eLearning. Please allow 48 business hours for the request to be processed. This form is available during registration and Add/Drop period only. The course(s) that you request using the Schedule Change request will be taken off of your schedule. You will not be charged or receive a grade. **Be aware that each schedule change form submitted results in a $15 schedule change fee applied to your student account. |back to top|

Q: How do I withdraw from my online class(es)?

A: If you are withdrawing after the semester has begun, then complete the Withdrawal Form. The Withdrawal Form is located on the Forms page. This form is only available after the semester has begun and Add/Drop Period has ended. You are allowed to complete this form until the 75% point in the semester. This date is posted both in the eLearning Calendar and RiverGuide (under the eLearning tab) each semester. When you withdraw from an online course, you will pay and receive a “W” grade for the course you are requesting to withdraw from. |back to top|

Q: How do I register for an online class?

Q: Why was my online class rejected?

A: There are several reasons your online class would have been rejected. Here are a few of those reasons. Contact a counselor at 601-403-1250 or your advisor for further assistance.

  • You have never completed an application for PRCC. You must first be admitted to the College before you can take any classes. PRCC Application
  • You have one or more holds on your student account from either the Admissions Office, Business Office and/or the Financial Aid Office.
  • You do not have an ACT score that is high enough to allow you to take certain classes. You must either take remedial classes or receive an override from an advisor.
  • There are pre-requisites you have not met for this course. For example, many BOT classes require you to take a level one course before you can take a level two course, and English Composition I must be taken before English Composition II. See an advisor for assistance. |back to top|

Q: How do I Verify my class(es)?

A: To verify your online classes, you will need to login to your Student Profile. In the upper right corner, it will either state "Verified" or "Non-Verified." After using the self-registration process, you have reserved the classes. At this point, the classes are "Non-Verified." The Office of eLearning has to officially enter your classes into PRCC's system and the state Enrollment Tool. If you do not have holds or restrictions on your PRCC account, then your classes will be entered and your profile will immediately change to "Verified." If you have holds or restrictions (such as ACT, class pre-requisites, or Business Office Holds), then you should expect to receive an email stating that you were not registered for the class(es). At this point, it is your responsibility to determine why you were denied the class(es). You are encouraged to not delay as classes have a tendency to fill and close. A seat in the class will not be held for you. You will have to re-register. |back to top|

Accessing my PRCC Account(s)

Q: How do I login to the PRCC Canvas?

A: To login to the PRCC Canvas, go to this web site: prcc.instructure.com. Your username is the first part of your PRCC email address. For example, if your email address is john.smith.4@student.prcc.edu, then your username for Canvas is john.smith.4 only.  Your password is the six-digit PIN that you use to access the RiverGuide and your student email. If you do not know your six-digit PIN, refer to these instructions. |back to top|

Q: When can I login to the PRCC Canvas?

A: You can log into Canvas within 24 hours after you register for courses and the courses have been verified in RiverGuide by office personnel. |back to top|

Q: Why can't I see my classes in the PRCC Canvas?

A: Even though you are able to login to Canvas, your courses will not appear until the first day of classes. Keep in mind that traditional day and night classes begin before online classes. You will see those day and night classes in Canvas before seeing the online courses. |back to top|

Q: What is RiverGuide?

A: RiverGuide is the portal system that PRCC uses to provide students and faculty a one-stop shop to all things Pearl River. All student data is maintained in this database. Students can login to RiverGuide to register for classes (except online classes), view grades, and review financial aid information.  To access RiverGuide, go to http://www.prcc.edu and select RiverGuide.|back to top|

Q: How do I login to RiverGuide?

A: On the login screen, use the following information to login to RiverGuide. Username- Your username is the first part of your PRCC email address. For example, if your email address is john.smith.4@student.prcc.edu, then your username for RiverGuide is john.smith.4 only.  PIN- The first time you login to RiverGuide, your six-digit PIN is a randomly generated number.  If you don't know your password to RiverGuide, please contact the IT Department at 601.403.1219.  More information once you have logged into RiverGuide.|back to top|

Q: What is my PRCC student e-mail address?

A: PRCC Student email addresses use the following format: student's first name.student's last name.student's day of birth. For example, student John Smith with a date of birth of March 10, 1985 would have an email address of john.smith.10@student.prcc.edu. If more than one John Smith shares the number 10, as his date of birth, then the system automatically generates the number. To precisely determine your unique email address, login to RiverGuide, and access your PRCC email account. Your email address is in the top right corner of the page. |back to top|

Q: How do I login to PRCC student email?

A: You will access your PRCC email account by logging into RiverGuide. Once in RiverGuide, click on the Student tab. Under the Student tab, view the Student Email module. Click on the link, "Click here to access your student email."   More information on the PRCC student email system (Gmail). |back to top|

Q: How can I change my passwords to RiverGuide, PRCC Email, and Canvas?

A: At this moment, in order to reset your password you must contact the IT Department at 601.403.1219. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU ALLOW 24 HOURS FOR THIS CHANGE TO FILTER THROUGH RIVERGUIDE AND INTO PRCC STUDENT EMAIL AND BLACKBOARD. DO NOT CONTINUE CHANGING THE PIN UNTIL YOU HAVE WAITED THE 24 HOUR PERIOD FOR THE CHANGE TO FILTER THROUGH THE OTHER SYSTEMS. |back to top|
